The Kenya
Rugby Union has acknowledged the Embu 7s rugby team’s rising influence in the
rugby 7s set up, by awarding it the hosting rights for the fourth leg of this
year’s National Sevens Circuit.
Eastern
Region Rugby Development Officer Patrick Mwika says the move will raise the
region's stature in 7s rugby having impressed in recent editions.
"We're
so honored that the Kenya Rugby Union has given us the right to host a leg of
the National Sevens circuit for two years starting this year.
“This is
a very exciting opportunity for us especially clubs playing in this region and
in the nation regional wide league because they will have a good chance to
compete against top tier teams.
“It's
also a big avenue for our age grade teams that we've started in Meru, Embu and
Tharaka Nithi counties they will have a good avenue to showcase their
talent.
The
region is already home to the 2024 FEASSA rugby 15s champions, All Saints
Secondary School, and Mwika says concerted efforts from all stakeholders will
only grow the game in the area.
"This
is great for Embu right and even for the teams that play in the nationwide
league and I urge our fans to come out in large numbers to support the teams.
“I also
urge our teams to start preparing early so that they will be ready for the
circuit."
The Embu
side have been handed a two-year contract after the expiry of Tisap 7s’
two-year term in the circuit.
