Reigning Vihiga County football champions Ebwali FC head coach Martin Alembi Peter is unbowed about the team’s ability to soar higher in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) championships despite the exit of Francis Muhambe who has brought football glory to the Luanda based school.
According to Alembi, Ebwali quest to return to the national stage for a third time since 2019 is on and the departure of the seasoned tactician will not affect the plans this year.
“If our performance in the Luanda sub-county soccer games is anything to go by, our target to reach the nationals this year is very possible. We only need support to ensure the boys compete optimally,” said Alembi.
Alembi led the team to thump Ekwanda Secondary 7-1 before humiliating Mumboha Secondary 7-0 before their own fans as Luanda Secondary football games kicked off at Mumboha and Ebusakami grounds respectively.
Although Meloy Odhiambo who impressed Ebwali fans after the resounding victory admits the departure of Muhambe has shaken the team to some extent, he maintains that Ebwali are determined to not only play at the national stage but also represent Kenya in the East African competitions.
“We are targeting East Africa. Ebwali will not underrate any opponent for there is no easy match. You can only claim to have had an easy game after winning the game,” said Odhiambo.
“After our coach left, we have had to prepare for these games on our own but I thank our principal who has since brought us a new coach. I would like to urge well-wishers to come in to support us,” Odhiambo added, revealing that his ambitions are to play professionally after sitting his KCSE this year.
Ebwali, who have since procured the services of Nickson Sirengo as Muhambe’s replacement, will be playing Em’matsi secondary ahead of the sub-county finals this Saturday.
At the same time, Em’matsi beat Mumboha 1-0. In the girls' side, Ibubi Girls beat Es’song’olo 17-0 before Bunyore Girls secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Ebwiranyi.
