The cabinet secretary for sports in Kenya, Salim Mvurya, welcomed his Ugandan and Tanzanian counterparts in a meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday to discuss budget allocations ahead of the coming CHAN competitions in the three countries.
One of the major talking points in the meeting was
initiating the PAMOJA visa that would see to it that fans and players alike
would have an easy time traversing across the three regions with minimal
interference throughout the competition, as part of the togetherness principles
of the EAC.
Another key point of concern, as expressed by the Tanzanian
minister, was the introduction of tax exemptions or tax reliefs as a way to
attract soccer fans across the continent.
As it stands, the budget for the operational fees for
hosting the tournament stands at 39 million dollars, divided as 13 million
dollars per nation. This translates to Ksh 1.6 billion per nation.
“All three nations have each handed in 13 million dollars as
part of the 39 million needed for the operational fees of the tournament,” said
Mvurya
The Ugandan minister expressed his eagerness to welcome the
rest of the world to East Africa as part of the larger PAMOJA initiative.
The Ugandan minister expressed his eagerness to welcome fans
across the continent, stating that he felt it would be the best tournament the organization
has held so far.
“We are very confident in the progress we have made, and I’d
like to take this opportunity to invite the rest of the continent for what I
feel will be the best tournament held so far”, the Ugandan minister said.
