Kenya is ‘edging closer’ to becoming the second African nation to host a Diamond League event after Morocco, Athletics Kenya executive member Barnaba Korir has said.
The Diamond League, the successor to the IAAF Golden
League in 2010, is the pinnacle of global one-day track and field competitions
under World Athletics.
“I have no doubt that Kenya in the coming few years
will host a Diamond League event,” Korir asserted. “With the Kip Keino Classic
already on the calendar in May, we are well-positioned to bid for more
high-profile meets.”
Korir emphasized Kenya’s growing influence in the
athletics world, pointing out that the country already hosts two Gold-label
events—the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country and the Great Chepsaita Cross Country.
“Our strong reputation and commitment to athletics
are driving the growth of the sport,” he added. “We are ensuring consistent
elite competition, which is vital for nurturing talent and boosting the
country’s sports economy.”
