Debutant Sheila Chepkirui upstages Obiri for New York City Marathon title

Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won the New York Marathon women's title in her race debut on Sunday, capturing the crown in a time of two hours, 24 minutes and 35 seconds.

Hellen Obiri, the 2023 New York Marathon winner and Olympic bronze medalist, was 14 seconds back in second, with Vivian Cheruiyot completing a Kenyan podium sweep in 2:25:21.

Chepkirui, who set an impressive marathon personal best of 2:17:29 in Valencia in 2022, showcased her strength on the demanding New York course as she upstaged Obiri for the title in her first time of asking in the streets of the Big Apple.

Obiri was eyeing to repeat her last year’s feat when she became the first woman in 34 years to win both the Boston and New York City Marathon in the same year, following her Boston win in April.

In the men’s contest, Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands clocked two hours, seven minutes and 39 seconds to claim the 2024 title.

The Somalia-born Dutchman, a 2022 New York third-place finisher and the Tokyo Olympic runner-up, beat Kenya's Evans Chebet by six seconds with Albert Korir rounding up the podium in 2:08:00.

Two-time champion Geoffrey Kamworor timed 2:08:50 to place fifth behind 2023 champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia who finished fourth in 2:08:12.
