Dagoretti High School defied odds to see off Highway Secondary School with a narrow 62-65 win in a high octane match at the Kenya Academy of Sports U-19 basketball tournament men’s final on Sunday.

Highway Secondary School went into the tournament as favourites to win the final after beating Hospital Hill in the semi -final but things took a drastic turn when they trailed Dagoretti by 12-7 in the first quarter of the match.

Highway However turned things around in the second, with the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Finston Sengemoja hitting crucial 3-pointers to propel his side to victory.

Dagoretti high looked sharp in the final stages of the game, often using height as an advantage to establish a slight 15-13 lead before a defensive foul allowed highway to stage a 17-15 comeback to in the third quarter.

The Mombasa road-based side’s offensive frailties were unmasked in the final quarter, when star player Sengemoja failed to convert even a single shot of his three throws following a penalty incident.

The three-day tournament which brought together twenty high school teams was played at the Nyayo national stadium and caught the eye of different basketball scouts from various universities and high schools.

Highway Secondary school’s Finston Sengemoja was deservedly awarded the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, in the men’s category after a string of brilliant individual performances.
