CS Mvurya takes over sports docket with CHAN in mind
The Sports Ministry on Tuesday got its third Cabinet Secretary in under two years as Salim Mvurya officially took over the docket from Kipchumba Murkomen, during a handover ceremony held at Talanta Plaza.
Mvurya’s immediate task is to ensure Kenya beats the CAF January 15 deadline to be ready to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) next month.
“I have officially taken over, and the work begins now.It is an honour to serve the people of Kenya. My focus will be on ensuring planned infrastructure projects are completed and providing facilities to nurture talent across the country,” said Mvurya.
On Monday, Mvurya held a virtual meeting with his counterparts from Uganda and Tanzania to review the preparedness of the three nations.
“We discussed our progress and resolved to ensure the tournament is a success. I am happy to report that we will host a successful CHAN next month,” he said.
The new CS also highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure to ensure Kenya meets international standards.
“My goal is to deliver facilities that will not only host CHAN but also nurture the immense talent in this country,” he added.
With systemic challenges, an urgent infrastructure agenda and a major international tournament on the horizon, his leadership is expected to set the tone for Kenya’s sports future.
Outgoing CS Murkomen did not mince his words, calling for urgent reforms in the sports federations.
“There are one-man show federations which operate with no legitimacy. They exist to enrich themselves while denying the youth opportunities.”
He called for a review of the Sports Act of 2013 and announced the establishment of a taskforce to address corruption, favouritism and mismanagement within sports federations.
“Through extensive consultations, the taskforce will identify priorities and propose reforms to enhance transparency and inclusivity,” he added.
The two CSs had earlier conducted an inspection tour at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums as the country races against time to deliver the two facilities for the February 1-28 event.
