CS Mvurya gives Talanta Stadium works thumbs up

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya on Thursday expressed satisfaction with the ongoing works at the multi-billion shillings Talanta Stadium in Nairobi.

In an inspection tour, Mvurya assured the 60,000-seater facility would be completed by December this year as planned, in readiness for the 2027 AFCON that will be co-hosted by Kenya Uganda and Tanzania.

The stadium, which is tailor-made for hosting football and rugby matches, has made significant strides since its ground breaking 10 months ago.

“My visit here is to just reconfirm that the work is going on very well and to also say the infrastructure which is very historical is destined for the AFCON. And from what I have seen, we’re on a good schedule to achieve the completion by December this year so that we can be ready for the championship,” he said.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has been tasked with the overall oversight of the project in order to ensure a smooth progress and construction by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the project contractor.

The initial proposed designs of the state-of-the-art stadium reveal inspirations from the national emblems, the two spears and the shield, and is estimated to cost taxpayers Ksh. 45 billion.

“It is a legacy project of his excellency the President and even here we have over 2000 youth or employees who have been engaged here and they will continue with this project until the end and therefore it has created employment,” he added.

The CS also said Nyayo Stadium, which is being refurbished for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) competition slated for August, is nearing completion.

The delayed tournament, which is for domestic-based players, will also be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as a dry-run for the AFCON fiesta.
