Speaking Wednesday at Talanta Plaza during the official handover ceremony from outgoing PS Eng. Peter Tum who served for two and a half years, CS Mvurya stressed the importance of good governance in sports administration.
“I would like compliance to be a top priority. All federations must be open, transparent, and accountable, especially in financial matters. We cannot afford to lose the potential of our young athletes due to opaque management in federations that fail to adhere to the law,” Mvurya stated.
The CS also reiterated the government's commitment to completing stalled stadium projects nationwide.
He emphasized that improved sports infrastructure is crucial for identifying, developing, and promoting talent at the grassroots level.
“As a government, we are dedicated to resolving all sports infrastructure challenges. We will engage stakeholders across the country to fast-track these projects and create more opportunities for young athletes,” he added.
Additionally, Mvurya highlighted the construction of 37 sports academies across various disciplines, underscoring the government's efforts to nurture and support emerging talent.
With Mwangi now at the helm, the government aims to tighten oversight in sports federations while accelerating efforts to enhance sporting facilities and talent development nationwide.
Mwangi comes to the Sports ministry from the ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, where he served in the same role for the State Department for Mining.
The new PS has his plate full as Kenya prepares to co-host major tournaments, starting with the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August this year and AFCON 2027, as well as overseeing completion of renovations of Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums and construction of Talanta City Stadium.
