Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya Thursday said the privilege of hosting the WRC Safari Rally has underpinned the remarkable growth of motorsport in Kenya, a development he believes has positioned the country as the motorsport capital of Africa.

Kenya has hosted the WRC since its return in 2021 when former President Uhuru Kenyatta sealed a five-year agreement with the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

Mvurya said the Safari Rally enjoys a special place in the country's national heritage as it tells the story of its rich cultural tapestry, the warmth of its people, and the diversity of its splendor.

“There is an inspiration for the growth of the motor sport in our country which has really made Kenya the running capital of Africa. We are witnessing an incredible growth in motorsport, and today, Kenya stands proud as the racing capital of the continent,” said Mvurya during this year’s event flag off by President William Ruto in Nairobi.

The CS noted that Kenya's growing prominence in the sport has not only captured the attention of Africa but has also earned the country recognition on the global motorsport stage.

He attributed this success to the ongoing commitment and efforts from various sectors within the country.

Mvurya invited Kenyans to attend the 2025 Safari Rally in large numbers, saying: “we are ready with all the routes and all the events from now, and I want to invite Kenyans to enjoy the spectacular moment of this rally because it is not just a motor sport but it is an inspiration of all our economic ecosystem.”

Acknowledging the importance of collaboration for the success of such a large-scale event, Mvurya expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors involved in the event as well as the support from various government ministries and agencies.

He also commended the efforts of the Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kiambu county governments, whose contributions were critical in ensuring the smooth organization of the rally.

CS Mvurya also fostered the growth of the motor sport in Kenya by saying that this year they have sponsored three female drivers.

The CS shared his vision to develop motorsport as a viable talent and career pathway for young Kenyans.

“The way forward for Kenya is to see how we can develop motorsport as a talent for Kenyans,” he added.
