CS Murkomen calls for transparency in next year’s AK polls
Speaking Thursday at the launch of the 2024 Chemususu Half Marathon at Talanta Plaza in Nairobi, Murkomen reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening governance within sports federations, beginning with transparent elections.
"We have Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections coming up, AK elections next year, and more in other federations. Going forward, the rules must be followed, and accountability must be upheld," he stated firmly.
AK last held general elections in 2015, where current president Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei came to power.
Though new elections were scheduled for 2017, they were halted by a court order after ten applicants contested the process.
Murkomen underscored the importance of transition in leadership, remarking, "Each of us must understand that this is a stage. You come, fulfil your role, and give others the chance to contribute."
Justice Lawrence Mugambi has further ruled that the current officials are not eligible to seek re-election, directing AK to amend its 2016 constitution within 90 days after consulting all stakeholders.
Tuwei silent on potential World Athletics bid
Meanwhile, Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei is keeping his intentions regarding a potential bid for the World Athletics presidency close to his chest.
When asked if he would aim to succeed Lord Sebastian Coe, should Coe move to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Tuwei replied, "Let’s cross that bridge when we get there."
Tuwei, who also serves as a vice president at World Athletics, has overseen AK through significant events such as the 2017 World Under-18 Championships, the 2021 World Under-20 Championships, the Kipchoge Keino Classic, and the Sirikwa World Cross Country Tour.
