Colourful ‘Kambasome’ Golf Tournament returns with splash of culture and unity

Railway Golf Club in Nairobi was vibrant on Saturday as it played host to the highly anticipated Kambasome Golf Tournament—a cultural celebration and networking event bringing together over 150 golfers from across Kenya.

Themed around ‘Malangi’—a Kamba word symbolizing bright and joyful colours, the tournament is more than just a sporting event. According to Virginia Munyau, the Kenya Lady Captain at Railway Golf Club, the initiative aims to promote peace, unity, and cultural pride among Kenya’s diverse communities.

“The Kambasome Tournament is about more than just golf. It brings together both golfers and non-golfers to network, celebrate the rich Kamba culture, and promote harmony among different communities,” Munyau said.

Golfers traveled from as far as Mombasa, Machakos, and from neighboring clubs such as Royal, Muthaiga, and Limuru to take part in the colorful tournament. The unique dress code (Malangi) stood out, turning the golf course into a moving canvas of vibrant Kamba identity.

“Where we come from, we are known for our bright colors—maybe it’s the sun but these colors bring joy. That’s why we asked everyone to dress in Malangi both on and off the course,” she added.

The event also featured exciting prizes, including hotel gift vouchers from the likes of Weston Hotel and Superior Hotel, making the day even more rewarding for participants.

The Kambasome Golf Tournament traces its roots back 15 years to an idea conceived by four passionate individuals: Dr. Ngumbau, Dr. Mutisya, Munyao and Jack Kitulu. Their vision was to combine fun, cultural celebration, and the spirit of golf in a single annual event.

Now joining the league of other tribal-themed tournaments such as Mulembe (for the Luhya community) and Njuri Ncheke (for the Meru), Kambasome continues to grow in stature and significance.

As the event wrapped up, there was a shared feeling of joy, connectedness, and pride—a testament to the tournament’s purpose of building bridges through sport and culture
