The ninth edition of the Chemususu Dam Half Marathon was launched on Thursday in Nairobi ahead of the event slated for November 16 in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the critical role of environmental conservation, especially for vital water catchment areas like Chemususu Dam.

The race’s main objective of the race is raising awareness of critical environmental challenges while funding impactful projects, that include, building a running track and new classrooms at Chemususu Primary School and planting 20,000 trees annually.

“By protecting Chemususu, we’re securing not only a critical water source but also creating a sustainable environment,” he stated.

“With 1,500 athletes expected to participate in this year's marathon and over Ksh. 700,000 raised, this initiative goes beyond sports, underscoring our commitment to preserving nature and supporting climate action.”

The CS also reiterated the power of sports for climate action.

“Sports can promote co-existence with the environment, conservation efforts, and community security.”

The race patron Musa Sirma, also the Member of the National Assembly for Eldama Ravine, said the marathon also supports President William Ruto’s 15 Billion Trees Initiative, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for Kenya.

“Last year, we promised to develop a proper track field at Chemususu, and I'm proud to say the ground has been prepared as per the requirements,” he said.

The prize money for the winner is Kshs 250,000, Kshs 150,000 for first runner-up and Kshs 100,000 for third place.
