Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet led compatriot Lilian Kasait to a 1-2 finish over the women’s 5km race at the World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia Sunday afternoon.

The World 5000m bronze medallist claimed gold in a new championship record of 14:35 with Kasait taking silver in a personal best of 14:39 as Ethiopia’s Taye settling for bronze.

The win caps a hugely successful season for Chebet who earlier in the year bagged gold at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia before claiming bronze at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s Nicholas Kimeli took bronze after finishing third in 13:16

Ethiopian duo of Hagos Gebrhiwet (12:59) and Yomif Kejelcha (13:02) took gold and silver respectively.
