Charles Okwemba: KPL title race down to three teams
Former AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba believes the fight for the 2024/25 Kenyan Premier League title is between three clubs - defending champions Gor Mahia, Tusker and Kenya Police FC – and that there will be no external force to alter the equation.
“According to me this race will be purely a three horse race affair. Gor Mahia, Tusker and Kenya Police are going to mount a tough battle in the league this season,” Okwemba reflected.
Tusker sit at the apex of the log on 33 points, three ahead of second-placed Police FC, KCB third on 28 and Gor Mahia sit fourth with 24 points.
“This year I must say that Gor Mahia are not leading the race not because the teams above them (Tusker, Police and KCB) are so good but because the defending champions have also been very inconsistent.
They should up
their game if they want to defend their title because Tusker and Police are and
will be ready to give them a run for their money,” added the former midfoelder.
The former midfield maestro does not give KCB a chance however citing the bankers’ inconsistency.
“You can never
count on KCB to win the league simply because they have always started
perfectly in the first round of the league but along the way they fizzle out
and surrender the title fight to other teams.
It has happened
so many times and as you know KCB have not been nowhere near winning the league
title when it comes to the second leg, towards the finish line,” he observed.
KCB have
dominated the top position for a better part of this first leg but have lost
the steam, thanks to a one-all draw against Bandari.
In their last
five matches, the bankers have only managed to win once, a 4-3 victory against
out-of-form Mara Sugar FC.
