Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has expressed his
disappointment at having to drop players but says it is necessary in order to
assemble a strong squad to represent the nation at the upcoming CHAN
tournament.
The five players who have been axed so far are Yakeen
Muteheli and Staphod Odhiambo of Ulinzi Stars, Keith Imbali of Shabana, Kelly
Madada of AFC Leopards, and Tusker FC’s goalkeeper Brian Opondo.
“I hate having to be the one to shut down a player’s dream
of representing the national team on the big stage, but unfortunately, it is
necessary to build a well-streamlined squad that I believe will best represent
the nation,” the coach stated.
He added that although some players have had to been released, Kenya has a solid talent base. He also noted that he cannot influence the decisions of any players considering moves to European clubs, even if it means losing them for the tournament.
“Representing one’s nation is the highest honour that can be bestowed on an athlete, in my opinion. We’ve had to let go of some players—not because they lack quality, but because the tournament requires a specific squad size. For this reason, we must retain only the best.”
He went on: “ I cannot persuade any player not to sign for a
European club. Some have already done so, and it is only once the tournament
begins that they will know if their decision was justified,” he added.
One of the team’s high-profile players and recent Kenya
Premier League winner, Mohammed Bajaber, was seen training individually with
the fitness coach. The coach explained that Bajaber is still recovering from an
injury and is not yet ready to endure the intensity of full first-team
training.
The coach also mentioned that the team is working hard and hinted at a ‘surprise’ for Kenyan fans.
President William Ruto also attended one of the team’s
training sessions to meet with the players. Although the meeting was held
behind closed doors, he assured the team of his full support as they prepare
for the tournament.
