High-flying Menengai Oilers put on another sturdy performance to dispatch stubborn Blak Blad 57-15 in a Kenya Cup clash played over the weekend, once more underlining their title credentials.

Oilers assistant head coach Lawi Buyachi says his boys had to put in a huge shift to defeat Blad who have proven a hard nut to crack in local rugby league.

“KU (Kenyatta University) brought their A-game, Blad being Blad you know they are very unpredictable but luckily we had plans to counter that. For this season we were lucky we had played them in the Impala Floodlit semi final, so we knew what they would bring.

"So, we just arranged how to manage and control the game and play our forward play. They are very dangerous and sneaky so we had to tell the boys what to do and we were really prepared for them,” explained Buyachi.

The Nakuru-based side has been in scintillating form since the start of the season and they’ve not set a foot wrong with Buyachi crediting their thorough pre-season for the good turn of fortunes.

“For us I think it’s just preparation, we had a beautiful preseason. I think the human resource, the players and the workmanship around the team has been amazing.

"We are taking it one game at a time and everything is working for us for now; we are just keeping the players on toes so that they don’t get complacent. We haven’t played the top six, I think Blad (Blak Blad) were our first big game, we are then going to Kenya Harlequin, KCB and we haven’t been tested yet,” Buyachi added.

Blak Blad were the Oilers  first true test of the season, following wins against struggling Strathmore Leos, Mwamba and Nakuru who are yet to win a single Kenya Cup match.

Oilers will be in the capital this coming weekend to face Kenya Harlequin at the RFUEA grounds in Nairobi hoping to carry on with the good form.

They are currently third on the log, level on points with KCB and Kabras Sugar.
