Bunyore Starlets dim Mombasa Olympic to register first win of the season
Limping Bunyore Starlets are over the moon after registering their first win this season in the Kenya Women Premier League after sinking Mombasa Olympics FC 2-1 at Mumboha Sports Ground on Saturday.
Clarice Audi neutralized Mombasa Olympics early lead in the
20th minute before Bunyore Starlets skipper Shirleen Onjote slotted in the free
kick from outside the box in the 35th minute sealing victory for the hosts.
The jovial Bunyore Starlets coach Solomon Masika admitted
that his Mumboha-based side has been pursuing victory for a long time in vain
and Saturday’s win is an ‘answered prayer’.
“This win is giving us direction on how to handle our next
fixtures with view of returning this team to its feet in the KWPL contest this
season,’ Masika said, adding that, “this is a good team that should not be
sitting at the bottom of the KWPL log at this time with six points.
Masika downplayed claims that his charges, despite winning,
displayed a poor game especially in the second half. He says it was a strategy
that helped him defend the victory.
“I looked at my players’ fitness. Also, we are already ahead of our opponents hence the easiest thing was to defend our lead instead of opening up the game. "
However, George Obiero is a sad man after his players’
efforts failed to count.
“It is painful. Although away games seldom favour visitors.
We outwitted them but the officiators let us down,” a distraught Obiero said, blaming
luck for their away loss in a match which was attended by a handful of fans.
Bunyore Starlets will lock horns with Ulinzi Starlets this
Wednesday at Mumboha in a must win match if they are to win back the fans’ confidence
.
