Bungoma Queens drooling over Women Premier League title after weekend win
Bungoma Queens tactician Godffrey Mabonga is eying the FKF-Women Premier
League (FKF-WPL) title this season though he understands it will not be an easy
task.
Mabonga, who took over the helm from Robert Machio just before the
start of the season, feels the side has improved a lot from last season,
in which they finished 10th, noting that they are now title contenders.
On Sunday, the Bungoma-based side hammered Bunyore Starlets 3-1 at the Bungoma
National Polytechnic grounds to climb to third place on the log with 20 points
after 11 matches.
Kibera Soccer Women are still in the apex of the log with 22 points, while
the defending champions, Kenya Police Bullets, sit second with 21 points.
Ulinzi Starlets and Zetech Sparks complete the top five slots with 20 points
and 18 points respectively.
Despite harvesting maximum points, Mabonga blamed his striking department
for wasting several chances which should have been converted and ensured
victory by a big margin.
“It was a very entertaining match and I congratulate my girls for a good
fight. We should have won with more than three goals, maybe six but my strikers
wasted the chances. Bunyore were also a tough side. Any team which manage to
score a goal you can't despise them,” averred Mabonga.
“Our aim is to win the title but as a coach I know it is a very hard task. I
don't want to put my girls under pressure but what I can tell them is to
maintain the focus and the winning streak.”
Elsewhere, at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, four-time champions Vihiga Queens fell
1-0 in the hands of newbies Kisped Queens, defending champions Police Bullets
thrashed Trinity Starlets 3-0 at Police Sacco Stadium, while Wadadia fell 3-1 to
Zetech Sparks.
Kisumu All Starlets pulled a 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Starlets, with the
match pitting Mombasa Olympic and Kibera Soccer Women registering a similar
result.
Coach Mabonga expressed confidence in overcoming stubborn Kibera Soccer
Women when both team lock horns on weekend in Nairobi.
“Our focus now is to prepare for Kibera. They have been tough side of late and I believe they will give us hard time. We want to revenge the 2-0 loss in the first round something I'm confident enough we can achieve if we maintain the focus,” said the coach.
