Bungoma Queens showed resilience and character to get their
season back on track with a 3–1 victory over Kibera Soccer Women in the Football
Kenya Federation Women's Premier League on Saturday, just a week after suffering
a setback off the pitch.
The Western Kenya-based side had been forced to forfeit
their previous match against Zetech Sparks after failing to meet league
requirements. The team failed to secure an ambulance, a mandatory requirement before
a league match kicks off, resulting in the loss of three points. Determined to
put that disappointment behind them, Bungoma Queens responded in style with a
dominant display.
Forward Ruth Chebungei was the star of the show, netting a
brace to put the game firmly in Bungoma’s control, while Sarah Mashiebi added
the third goal to seal the win. Kibera Soccer Women managed a consolation, but
it was not enough to deny Bungoma maximum points.
Speaking to Citizen
Digital, head coach Godfrey Mabonga praised his players for their focus and
preparation, noting that the team executed their game plan effectively despite
recent challenges.
“We prepared well for this match, and the players showed
great discipline and determination,” Mabonga said after the game.
However, the coach admitted that the season has not been
without its difficulties. He pointed to recurring injuries as the biggest
obstacle affecting consistency, adding that the situation has been made tougher
by the absence of new signings during the most recent transfer window.
Injuries have forced the technical bench to constantly
adjust, but Mabonga remains optimistic that his squad can continue competing
strongly as the season progresses.
The win lifts Bungoma Queens to sixth place on the table
with 13 points from nine matches, keeping them within touching distance of the
leading pack as the Women’s Premier League campaign gathers momentum.
