Bungoma Poly eye strong debut season in hockey topflight league

The Bungoma National Polytechnic women’s handball team has lauded the unwavering support from their institution after making their debut in the National Handball League this season.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Sports Officer Ahmed Juma Mohammed praised the administration, particularly Principal Dr. Godfrey Murunga, for backing both the men's and women's teams.

“My girls did a good job. It’s our first time competing at this level, and we are satisfied with the results. With time, things will get better.

“The support we are getting from our institution is great, and we are among the few institutions participating in the National Handball League. We truly appreciate our principal for his continuous support,” said Juma.

Head Coach Sharon Simiyu echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the national level.

“We are grateful to our institution for giving us this platform and the necessary facilities to participate at this level. Our goal is to finish among the top teams, possibly making it to the round of 12,” Simiyu stated.

The team has played two matches so far in the Women’s National League:

First Match: A thrilling 30-30 draw against National Youth Service (NYS) at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

Second Match: A hard-fought 26-35 loss against a formidable Daystar Falcons side.

Despite the defeat, team captain Esnas Wafula remained optimistic about the team’s future.

“The game was good. This was our first time competing against an experienced team like Daystar. Our players got tired early, but we will train hard, and next time, we will beat them,” said Wafula.

Men’s Team Struggles but Remains Determined

Meanwhile, the Bungoma National Polytechnic men’s team has also been battling in the league, having played seven matches so far. Their record stands at one win, one draw, and five losses, placing them 24th out of 28 teams in the standings.

With continued support and determination, both the men’s and women’s handball teams from Bungoma National Polytechnic are optimistic about improving their performance and making a mark in the National Handball League.
