Principal Secretary
State Department of Sports Eng. Peter Tum Wednesday night insisted on the
Government’s commitment to invest more in women football, as in the case of men’s
side of the sport when he visited the Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets
camp ahead of their crucial tasks in the WAFCON and World Cup qualifiers
respectively.
Starlets will face
Tunisia in a first leg WAFCON 2026 qualifier on Friday at the Ulinzi Complex
and Tum has tipped the experienced ladies to register a crucial win ahead of
the second leg on Tuesday next week.
"We just came
here to talk to our girls and motivate them before they play Tunisia on Friday
and they have assured me that they will beat their opponent both home and
away," said Tum.
"As a
government we have made it clear that all teams will receive equal treatment
and also talent nurturing to have strong teams year in year out," added
the PS.
Football Kenya Federation
President Hussein Mohammed who accompanied the PS is optimistic that their partnership
with the government will bear much success.
"Since we came
into the office we are very grateful to the government for their fully support
in making sure that players and their technical benches get what they want and
in return we promise to fly the Kenyan flag high," he stated.
On her part, Harambee
Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba added that the visit came in the right time,
ahead of Tunisia clash.
Odemba is set to
name her final squad today as they hold their last training session before the
encounter.
"We always
receive a good support from the government and federation but their visit here
is a booster and the girls are happy and ready to go."
Tunisia held their
light training at the Kasarani Annex on Wednesday and both teams are set to
feel the match day pitch later Thursday.
