Boxing in Kenya is experiencing a significant resurgence, with an increasing number of counties embracing the sport.

The Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) Secretary General David Munuhe expressed confidence in the sport’s growth and potential, citing the increased participation in national tournaments.

“Boxing is returning to the level we envisioned, and this is a great achievement because many counties are now involved, with several new ones joining. We anticipate doubling the number of participating counties next year,” Munuhe stated.

The recent national boxing championship at Green Park recorded an impressive turnout of 149 boxers, comprising 134 men and 14 women.

“A total of 18 counties participated, with Kisii, Kirinyaga, Taita Taveta, and Migori making their debut in the national boxing scene.

The three-day championship saw 17 boxers emerge victorious in their respective bouts. Nairobi, a dominant force in the tournament, entered 11 boxers in the finals.

These finalists and other top performers secured qualification for the upcoming National Intermediate Championship, set to take place from February 20-26, 2025.

The increased participation in boxing reflects the sport’s growing appeal across Kenya. The inclusion of new counties demonstrates BFK's efforts to expand the sport beyond its traditional strongholds.

With more counties expressing interest and committing to the sport, boxing in Kenya is poised for further growth and development.

BFK aims to build on this momentum by enhancing grassroots programs, improving training facilities, and increasing awareness about the sport.

The federation also focuses on nurturing young talent and providing opportunities for boxers to compete at higher levels.

As Kenya continues to strengthen its boxing landscape, the participation of more counties signals a promising future.

With sustained efforts from stakeholders, boxing is well on its way to reclaiming its position as a significant sporting discipline in the country.
