Basketball: KPA stop Equity to defend men's Premier League title

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men's basketball team have successfully defended their Premier League title after overcoming Equity 68 - 58 in game four of best five played at Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa County Sunday evening.

The Dockers sluggishly started the game coming from five baskets down to win the first quarter 18 - 14.

In the start of second quarter, Equity were more organized and confident and needed only three minutes to equalize the scores, and went on to win the quarter  20 - 10.

The game was almost abandoned in third quarter after Equity technical bench protested what they termed poor officiating, forcing it to be paused it for about eight minutes.

Upon resumption, KPA fought strongly and won the quarter 15 - 12 but still trailed with overall scores as Equity were leading 46 - 43.

A monster display yielded a 25-12 in the final quarter in the favor of KPA, to seal their title with a commanding 68-58 win, with a game to spare.

Eugene Adera was named the Most Valuable Player following his heroics in the match, extended from midseason.

KPA head coach Sammy Kiki was delighted to see his side retain the championship, "After a strong display yesterday my players were fatigued but they made it and shown we were the better side. We wanted to seal in game four and we have done it," the coach said.

On his side Carey Odhiambo, Equity head coach, praised his team for what he termed a heroic show.

"We played very well in the first three quarters but the boys lost concentration and all backed in our yard and that's how we lost, but am happy we have played well this season."

This completes a double joy for KPA, whose ladies side won the Premier League title Saturday evening after stopping a determined Zetech.
