Basilong: CAF not keen to take away CHAN from Kenya
Speculation arose earlier this week, suggesting Kenya might be replaced by Rwanda due to delays in preparing key venues.
However, Kabelo Bosilong, CAF's Host Country Manager for Kenya, dispelled these claims, emphasizing that CAF remains dedicated to the original hosting plan.
“There has been a lot of chatter on social media recently, but I want to assure everyone that CAF is fully committed to ensuring this tournament is hosted in the countries initially designated,” Bosilong said during the inauguration of Kenya’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) on Tuesday.
Kenya has demonstrated its determination to host not only CHAN 2024 but also the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking at the event, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen highlighted the country's commitment despite ongoing challenges.
“I understand the concerns about the February deadline - we share them. We’ve had extensive meetings with contractors and are relying on their assurances that the work will be completed on time. We are addressing any hurdles they face to ensure success,” said Murkomen.
Kenya is racing against the clock to complete renovations at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium ahead of CAF’s December 31, 2024, deadline.
The CHAN 2024 tournament is set to run from February 1 to February 28, 2025, bringing the spotlight firmly on Kenya’s readiness to co-host this prestigious continental event.
