Nairobi City Marathon CEO Barnaba Korir has laid out a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring the marathon garners global attention.

Korir says Athletic Kenya (AK) envisions the marathon becoming a part of the global marathon competition circuit, eventually serving as a championship event in the likes of New York City Marathon, Chicago Marathon and Tokyo Marathon.

The third edition of the marathon, which has so far attracted over 8,600 participants, is set for Sunday with Nyayo Stadium marked as the starting point.

We are focusing on the technical aspects, as we have the organizational structures capable of hosting this event at the same level as other countries. This approach not only makes it easier to attract additional sponsorship but also demonstrates to the world that Kenya not only produces the best marathoners, but also has the technical officials to manage events to the required standards,” explained Korir.

With the resources we receive from the government and sponsors, this event can definitely be elevated to a level that attracts major marathons worldwide,” he added.

Korir, also the AK Youth Development Committee chairman, also expressed a desire to build a robust sports industry to provide opportunities for local athletes.

While our athletes have been competing and winning money abroad, we also aim to build a strong sports industry within Kenya. By organizing more events, we can provide our many athletes with opportunities to compete locally, as not all of them have the chance to participate in international competitions,” he noted.

The Nairobi City Marathon will feature a variety of race categories, including the full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), a 10 km race, and a fun run (6 km).

The event will also award prize money to the first 20 finishers, with marathon winners pocketing Ksh.3.5 million, with second and third place finishers will receive Ksh.2.25 million and Ksh.1.5 million, respectively.

Registration is ongoing and will close on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Participants can sign up by visiting the official marathon website at www.nairobicitymarathon.com.
