Babu vows to steady City Stars ship amid relegation threat
This despite the Nairobi based outfit struggling to impress all season and currently being third from bottom in the 18-team league on 17 points, level with Bidco United and Posta Rangers who are 17 and 18 respectively.
They are winless this year and their last victory in the league stretches back to December 7 when they claimed a 1-0 victory over Murang’a Seal.
“The goal is to remain in the league and also work on building a strong mentality among the players. We are not in a good position, having lost two games so far, but the players have morale despite being in the relegation zone. Our next match will be crucial in shaping our survival plan.”
Despite the difficult season, Babu remains optimistic that the team will turn things around.
“Football has its ups and downs, but with the morale in the squad, I believe things will change. We need to work hard in training, and if we survive relegation, next season we will be better organized and planned,” he added.
To strengthen the squad, Babu revealed that City Stars are looking to recruit new players, particularly in attack.
“We have plans to sign quality offensive players. Our defence is not bad, and we have a solid midfield, but adding two to three attacking players will help us improve.”
Babu, formerly in charge of Kisumu All Stars, took over at City Stars after parting ways with Kenya Police FC due to disappointing performances in the CAF Confederation Cup and a poor start to the current FKF Premier League campaign.
On his experience with the club’s management so far, he had no complaints.
“Since I joined, everything has been good. I haven't heard any complaints from the players.”
City Stars recently lost Mohammed Bajaber, who completed a Ksh. 1 million move to Kenya Police FC.
Babu admitted that Bajaber’s exit is a significant blow to the team.
"Losing him is a big problem, and as a coach, it gives me a headache because he is a very talented player. But it's also a good move for him since he will prove himself at his new club and improve his quality as a national team player."
Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, Babu is under no illusions about the task ahead.
"It is a must-win game. If we lose, the pressure on the players will increase. It will be a tough match, but with the right plan and maximum effort from the players, I believe we can win."
Their last victory came against Murang’a Seal on December 7, 2024, and they have managed only two draws in their last seven matches.
With a crucial match ahead, Babu and his squad are fighting to escape the drop zone and keep their FKF Premier League status intact.
