Athletics Kenya (AK) has rolled out an ambitious program to ensure Kenyan athletes are in peak form for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, set to take place from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo, Japan.

With the championships returning to Japan for the third time, after Osaka 2007 and Tokyo 1991, AK’s Executive Member and Youth Development Director Barnabas Korir has emphasized the need for early and strategic preparations to boost Kenya’s medal tally.

“Our main goal is to surpass past performances and reclaim our dominance, just like we did in 2015 in Beijing, China,” Korir stated.

To achieve this, AK is urging athletes to take advantage of key build-up events, starting with the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour, Africa’s only Gold-level cross-country event, scheduled for February 22, 2025, at Lobo Village in Eldoret.

“Sirikwa Classic has grown tremendously over the last three years, attracting top athletes from around the world. This year’s event is a perfect platform for our runners to gauge their fitness ahead of the outdoor and indoor season, the Diamond League, and ultimately, the World Championships,” Korir added.

With the rebuilt Tokyo National Stadium set to host the world’s best, AK is committed to providing Kenyan athletes with ample competition opportunities before the final trials.

The countdown to Tokyo 2025 has officially begun, and all eyes are on Team Kenya to make history once again.
