Assad FC cling to survival as fans and football fraternity rally to save the club

In a dramatic turn of events, what appeared to be the end of the road for Assad FC has instead sparked a powerful resurgence.

Just a day after the club announced its dissolution, an overwhelming wave of support from fans, players, and stakeholders has breathed new life into the embattled team.

Following Wednesday’s emotional declaration that the club would cease operations, CEO Saidi Ali Vinji released a heartfelt statement on Thursday, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity.

"Following yesterday’s painful decision to dissolve the team," Vinji wrote, "We have been deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of support, pleas, and encouragement from our loyal fans, dedicated volunteers, and football stakeholders from all corners of the country."

Support has poured in from across the football ecosystem, with figures from the National Super League and beyond pledging assistance. Notably, Harvest of Hope (HOHA) Chairman Fred Munuku personally reached out to express his solidarity with the club.

“Notably, our colleagues from the National Super League have reached out with pledges of support, showing that the spirit of unity in football is still alive and strong,” said Vinji.

Perhaps most inspiring has been the response from within the squad. Shocked by the prospect of a mid-season disbandment, the players have united in a passionate plea to keep the club alive — with one firm condition.

"Our players have also made their voices heard — passionately opposing the mid-season disbandment," Vinji noted. "They have urged the current officials not to give up and have committed to giving their all in the remaining matches, with one condition: that their essential needs are met."

Attention now turns to two critical league fixtures: against MOFA FC on April 19 and APS Bomet on April 26 — matches that could ultimately determine Assad FC’s survival. A make-or-break fundraising event has also been scheduled for April 27, with the club calling on all supporters to rally once again.

“With this renewed hope, we make one final appeal to all well-wishers and friends of Assad FC to come through for us once more,” the statement read. “Let’s come together and keep the spirit of Assad alive. Every little bit counts.”

For a club that has weathered financial storms and battled against the odds on and off the pitch, this may well be its most defining moment.
