APS Bomet miss chance to top log after draw in Mombasa

Mombasa United Renson(Blue) Wakalo against Brian Ngala of APS Bomet.
APS Bomet missed an opportunity to top the National Super League (NSL) standings after being held to a goalless draw by Mombasa United in Saturday's afternoon match at Serani Sports Ground, Mombasa.
The visitors, APS Bomet, dominated the early stages of the game, with striker John Musikhu and midfielder Cosmas Abuta both having chances to break the deadlock.
However, Mombasa United goalkeeper Kevin Tila was quick to deny them both opportunities.
Mombasa United came close to taking the lead five minutes before halftime. Bakari Nyae sent in a low shot past APS Bomet goalkeeper Bob Cetric, but the keeper managed to recover and clear the ball off the line. Sammy Riziki pounced on the rebound, but his attempt was blocked by the defenders.
In the final moments of the first half, United's captain, veteran Wilberforce Lugogo, took a powerful 40-yard free-kick that was expertly saved by Cetric, ensuring the score remained level at the break.
The second half saw Mombasa United take control of the game, with Jackson Watee squandering three clear chances to give the hosts the lead.
APS Bomet head coach Evans Mafuta acknowledged the result, noting that his team would focus on learning from the draw.
"We came here with the intention of taking all three points, and while both teams had equal chances to score, we couldn't convert. Luck wasn't on our side today, but we'll work hard and build on this result," Mafuta said.
Mombasa United head coach Ahmed Said, while also disappointed by the result, highlighted the positives from the match.
"It was a tough game on paper, but we were well-prepared and had a game plan. We had plenty of opportunities to take the three points but couldn't finish. We'll take the positives and focus on improving," said Said.
APS Bomet now shares the top spot in the NSL standings with Nairobi United, both teams on 49 points.
