Assistant coach Kevin Wambua feels that Kenya national Sevens side Shujaa is in a better position to fight harder in this weekend’s Toulouse Sevens tournament, inspired by former skipper Andrew Amonde and Eden Agero.

The duo are part of the technical bench and have been in camp with the team for close to a month, heading to the penultimate leg of this season’s series.

Speaking before the team jetted out to France, Wambua said the duo have helped lift the mood in camp apart from their contribution in some technical aspects of the game.

“The training sessions have been extremely positive and Andrew is doing a good job especially with set pieces; just to try and help the boys out with the scrums and Eden is doing a good job helping the kickers so it’s an overhaul effort that we needed that kind of technical input, people who have been there before against the ropes so they bring a lot of positivity into the camp and the boys are looking sharp.”

Amonde who skippered Kenya to victory in Singapore sevens in 2016 says “It’s a matter of concentrating with Kenya Sevens, just to try to guide and see how good they can be in the last two legs they are left with. Just to bring more motivation and spirit to the team. We are trying to create a few things and pushing them forward to see how good they can be.”

Head coach Damian McGrath said the team has every chance of survival and they would do everything to avoid the axe, for the first time since 2014.

“The boys all understand what’s at stake and we will just play to our best. The key to all this has to be can we eradicate our mistakes which have been our Achilles heel for long. We have a very simple plan that suits what we have and we will try to follow it.”

Kenya are in group B for the Toulouse 7s, together with current series leaders New Zealand, Uruguay and Canada.

How relegation will be decided

The teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th at the end of Toulouse will enter a four-team relegation play-off together with the Challenger Series 2023 winners Tonga at the eleventh and final round of the Series in London.

The relegation play-off will be a round-robin format with the top two teams then playing a final.

The winner will become the 12th core team on the 2024 Series, while the other three teams will enter their respective Regional Sevens Championships in order to qualify for the 2024 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.

The Challenger Series according to World rugby is a conveyor belt for teams wishing to qualify to play the World Rugby Sevens Series.
