Four-time Kenya Women Premier League champions Vihiga Queens are aiming to sign three new players as they bid to bolster their squad ahead of the second round of the league.

Queens are aiming to reclaim the league title they last won in the 2022. Police Bullets are the defending champions and a fierce tussle is expected to ensue between the two clubs.

In the meantime, the Boniface Nyamunyamuh coached Vihiga are placed fourth on the league table on 20 points, two behind leaders Kenya Police Bullets and second-placed Kibera Soccer Women as Ulinzi Starlets wrap up the top five with 18 points.

In a conversation with Citizen Digital, Nyamunyamuh said they are aiming to make the most of the January transfer window, to sign three players or more, as they are also keen to fill the gap left by their immediate former long serving captain Maureen Ater who joined Indian Women Premier League.

“Maureen departure to India is a blow to us considering that she was very instrumental in midfield and had displayed leadership qualities. As club management we wish her the very best and we must ensure we fill the gap in this transfer window.

Other positions which need to be beefed up are goalkeeping and striking. Since Janet Bundi left to join Egyptian Top Tier side (NBE) in October, we have been struggling scoring goals, a department we want to invest,” he explained.

“We have identified some of the players and we will also post on our social media for any player who wants to join Vihiga to come for trials. We want to revive our lost glory by winning the league this season and to achieve that, we need to capitalize well in this transfer window and if need be, to sign more than three players including foreigners.”

The Kidundu-based side is now gearing up for their Sunday match against fourth-placed Ulinzi Starlets, a match Nyamuh has termed “a do or die”.
