‎‎The fixture, which remains the most-watched club football match in Kenya, was initially scheduled for November 2024 but was pushed back due to the unavailability of a suitable venue.

‎‎‎Speaking ahead of the clash, AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani, who will be taking charge of his first Mashemeji Derby from the touchline, exuded confidence in his squad.

“I have been speaking to my players, reminding them that as a player, I never lost a derby. Its all about mentality. It may be a big game for the fans, but for the team, it should be treated as just another match," said Ambani.

‎‎Leopards will be banking on experienced players such as Clifton Miheso to guide the younger stars through the high-pressure fixture.

Nobody is born playing in a derby. Everything happens in steps. Fortunately, we have players like Miheso, who have been here before and will help the younger ones adapt," he added.

‎‎The former Ingwe striker, whose brother Boniface Ambani was a key figure for the club, recalled how the ex-strikers words motivated the team.

“He used to say, We already have three points; we are only waiting for the goals.’ That kind of belief is what we need."

‎‎Leopards, currently fifth on the FKF Premier League table, will be aiming to break Gor Mahias dominance, having lost both league encounters last season. Their last victory in the fixture came on May 14, 2023.

‎‎On the other end, Gor Mahias Serbian coach Sinisa Mihic, who has been in charge for just over a month, is expecting a high-intensity battle.

‎‎"I want my players to cover every blade of grass. It has not been easy to get maximum points in the league, but we believe we can get all three in this match," Mihic said.

‎‎However, the tactician raised concerns over the playing surfaces in Kenyas top flight, lamenting the high number of set-piece goals.

‎‎"Most goals have come from corners, free kicks, and penalties rather than open play. The quality of pitches is something that needs to be addressed."

‎‎Despite this, Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno insists they will not underestimate their rivals.

"AFC Leopards remain our biggest rivals, and we are taking this match seriously. We urge our fans to stay calm because, at the end of the day, football unites us."

‎‎In the last 95 league meetings, Gor Mahia has won 33 times, scoring 90 goals, while AFC Leopards has managed 28 wins with 80 goals. 34 encounters have ended in draws.

‎‎Defending champions Gor Mahia, currently third on the log with 42 points from 23 matches, are keen to maintain their title charge, while AFC Leopards, sitting fifth, see this as a chance to stay in contention.
