All set for Nyanza M-PESA Jr. NBA Tournament

In the boys’ semi-finals, Olympic were in a class of their own as they brushed aside Harambee 15-6 in the first semi-final. St. John on the other hand pushed hard before edging out favorites Makini School 16-14.

The M-PESA Jr. NBA tournament heads to Kisumu this weekend for the highly anticipated Nyanza regional finals at Kenyatta Sports Grounds.

A total of 40 boys’ and girls’ teams will compete in a series of thrilling 5-on-5 games, with the ultimate goal of clinching the regional championship. Winners in both categories will walk away with smartphones and airtime, courtesy of Safaricom’s M-PESA.

Additionally, outstanding players will be scouted for the elite basketball development camp in April, where the top 50 boys and 50 girls from across the country will receive specialized training.

Beyond the action on the court, players will also participate in financial literacy clinics organized by M-PESA Go, reinforcing Safaricom’s commitment to youth empowerment.

“The tournament is important because it reflects what we have been doing through M-PESA since its inception—supporting talent across the country. We also empower young people through financial literacy via M-PESA Go,” said Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa.

The Kisumu regional finals follow intense competitions in other regions. In the Rift Valley finals, Uasin Gishu Junior School (Boys) and Testimony Junior School (Girls) were crowned champions.

In the Mombasa region, Aga Khan Academy and Umoja Junior School from Changamwe clinched the title, while in Nairobi, St. John’s Junior School from Korogocho and Olympic Junior School emerged victorious.

The M-PESA Jr. NBA program aims to nurture young basketball talent while equipping over 10,000 boys and girls across Kenya with financial literacy skills.
