All Saints Embu RFC dream big after conquering National School Games
All Saints Embu head coach Benson Mwendwa says they have
to expose their players to more physical opponents and
improve on their strength and conditioning as they eye the East Africa school
games Rugby 15s title.
All Saints beat Butula to claim historic KSSSA National 15s
title after rallying from behind to win 12-10 in the final that was played at
the Machakos School and their next focus is to conquer East Africa, Mwendwa believes.
“Last year we played
very physical Uganda sides and for us to match them this season we need to
improve on our strength and conditioning and expose our players to tougher
opponent as we build up towards the competition in Uganda,” said Mwendwa.
Having lost 38-0 in last year’s finals against Butula,
Mwendwa said they had to go back to the drawing board and plan for a better
coach and the pressure of being at home, in Eastern Region, meant they had to
work hard and keep the trophy.
“We had to go back to the drawing board and improve the
tactical aspect of the game and study our main opponents,” he said. “Last year
we still had a good team only a few things to be improved and the pressure of
being hosts also keep us going and we had to make our fans proud ,”added
Mwendwa.
In the past years, both the Sevens and Rugby 15s have been
dominated by teams from the Western and Nyanza regions, and having dethroned
rugby power house like Butula, the youthful tactician believes they have what
it takes to dominate the game for some time.
“We go for players from primary schools who have already had
the idea of how the game is played so they only have a few things to improve on
and that is how we have reached an extent of matching our Western and Nyanza rivals,”stated
the coach.
