Akengo aspires for national team glory amid Pirate's Kenya Cup struggles
South Coast Pirates fly-half Kelly David Akengo is setting his sights on national team recognition, even as his club grapples with the challenges of their maiden Kenya Cup season.
The Pirates, promoted after an impressive 2023/24 KRU Championship campaign, have struggled to find their footing in the top tier, losing all four of their opening fixtures.
Despite these setbacks, Akengo remains optimistic about both his ambitions and the team’s prospects.
A former Kabras RFC and MMUST player, Akengo played a pivotal role in the Pirates’ promotion. He emerged as the top point scorer in the 2023/24 KRU Championship, his precision kicking and on-field creativity key to the team’s success.
The Pirates secured their place in the Kenya Cup by defeating Daystar Falcons 30-15 in the semifinals and went on to edge out Impala 16-14 in the final at their Seacrest Grounds in Diani.
This season, Akengo has already scored 18 points in the opening four rounds, demonstrating both consistency and resilience under pressure.
Reflecting on his journey, Akengo shared with Citizen Digital: “Playing at this level is challenging but rewarding. Every game teaches us something new. I am focused on improving my game and contributing to the team, but my ultimate dream is to represent Kenya on the international stage.”
The Pirates’ transition to the Kenya Cup has been tough. Without a win so far, the team has faced formidable opponents while adapting to the heightened level of competition. However, Akengo is confident they can turn their season around.
“We’ve had a tough start, but it’s not over. We’re learning from our mistakes and working harder in training. I’m confident we’ll get that first win soon,” he said.
The team’s commitment to improvement is evident as they work to build cohesion and refine their tactics. Akengo’s leadership and scoring prowess will be crucial as the Pirates aim for their first Kenya Cup victory this weekend when they host Strathmore Leos in Diani. A win could lift them out of the relegation zone and restore momentum to their campaign.
At just 24 years old, Akengo has already earned admiration for his composure and skill. His dream of donning the national team jersey is fueled by his standout performances, and he views the Kenya Cup as the ideal stage to showcase his potential.
“Wearing the national colours would be a dream come true. I know it won’t be easy, but I’m ready to put in the work. For now, my focus is on helping Pirates succeed,” he said.
