The Football Kenya Federation Women's Premier League club Bungoma Queens are aiming to end the season on a high when the final round of matches are played this weekend.
Queens have
secured their spot in the 2025/26 top-tier league and will be seeking to wind
up their commendable campaign with maximum points against Bunyore Starlets. The
fixture comes immediately after the Queens trashed Gideon Starlets 3-0 in the
FKF Women's Cup round of 16 at the weekend to qualify for a spot in the
quarterfinals.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Bungoma Queens head coach
Godfrey Mabonga said his focus is on help his lethal forward Catherine Khaemba
clinch the coveted Golden Boot. Despite struggling with injuries, Khaemba has
been prolific upfront and is still firmly in contention for Golden Boot race,
alongside Rebecca Okwaro of Kenya Police Bullets.
Mabonga added
that Catherine Khaemba winning the Golden Boot will be a motivating factor to
the rest of the squad, and also a consolation to Bungoma Queens after failing
to win the league.
"We have
lost the league but we’re still in the Golden Boot race as a team. If Catherine
Khaemba can emerge as the league's top scorer, that will wipe our tears as the
league is already out of our hands," Mabonga said.
The two players
are just separated by a single goal, Okwaro leads with 14 goals while Khaemba is
hot on her heels with 13. Others in race are Joy Oyiro of Ulinzi Starlets, in
third place, with 12 goals while Faith Mboya of Kibera Soccer Women comes in
fourth with 10 goals.
The Queens will visit
Bunyore Starlets for their final fixture of the season at Mumboha Grounds on
Sunday starting 1PM local time.
