The Kenyan football fraternity has been thrown into
mourning following the demise of AFC Leopards Secretary General Gilbert Andugu.
According to his family, Andugu passed on earlier
today in Kitengela, where he has been hospitalized since the beginning of the
month.
Leopards have also confirmed the sad development on
social media, terming his loss as a huge blow to the club he served
wholeheartedly.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of
our Secretary General, Mr. Gilbert Andugu.
“Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to
Andugu's family, friends, and relatives.” Read a statement on the club’s
official Facebook handle.
A marketer by profession, he previously led the Mombasa branch from 2015,
playing a key role in growing its membership base and financing the AFC
Leopards Cubs—an effort that saw the junior side win the Nairobi Region League.
He took over from Oliver
Sikuku, who had served the maximum two terms allowed by the club’s
constitution.
Before assuming the secretary general role, Andugu served as chairman of the branch heads and had built a
reputation for his organizational skills and commitment to the club.
During his tenure, Andugu oversaw several structural improvements, notably within the club’s human resource department, which he left more streamlined and efficient.
