ADAK halts anti-doping programmes over coronavirus concerns
The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) is scaling down on testing and sample collection programmes in view of aiding in the control of the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement, the ADAK CEO Japhter Rugut recognized the global impact on sporting activities the COVID-19 virus has had, saying they will continue to monitor the situation.
“We are constantly following up on the developments concerning the COVID-19 and how it will impact on the testing activities not only in Kenya but across the globe. Nonetheless, ADAK is practising significantly reduced testing programs as we look at the national and global situation.
“ADAK is taking all necessary steps and precautions to ensure that the health and safety of all athletes and our staff members (inclusive of sample collection personnel) as we respond to the COVID-19 global pandemic,” Rugut said.
The virus has already infected some high-profile athletes and claimed the lives of thousands of people across the globe, Rugut has advised athletes to follow suit in the instructions from health experts to avoid exposure.
“Athletes and their support personnel are encouraged to remain alert and continue taking the precautionary measures of maintaining basic hand and respiratory hygiene as well as practising social distancing. ADAK remains committed to working with stakeholders to help our nation through this crisis.”
Federations in the country have already called off competitions, offering athletes and trainers ample time to practice the government’s call for social distancing.
This move aims to reduce contact between individuals hence minimize on the chances of exposure to the virus.
