Achieng floors Soledad to  join Conjestina in Kenya’s world boxing title history

Sarah Achieng became the third Kenya woman to win a world boxing title after taking home the vacant World Boxing Foundation (WBF) title.

The 34-year-old boxer, commonly known as 'Ängel of War', won Women’s World Super Lightweight after beating Edith Soledad of Argentina in a match played at Charter Hall, Nairobi, on Saturday night.

The Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) super lightweight champion won on a unanimous point decision against Soledad in a 10-round contest.

Judges Rashid Modest, Ali Athumani and Linet Anam scored 97-93, 97-92 and 98-92, respectively in favour of Achieng’.

“My fight against Soledad wasn’t easy, and I had to study her tactics as the fight went on to emerge the victor. The victory has made a statement that I can challenge for something bigger,” Achieng said.

Following the victory, Achieng joins Fatuma Zarika and Conjestina Achieng in holding a world title belt.

 Zarika once held the World Boxing Council (WBC) female super-bantamweight title, while Conjestina is a former WBF world and Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF) title holder.

Achieng’ is now eyeing the WBC super lightweight title and has challenged reigning champion Chantelle Cameron to face her.

Saturday’s victory now stretches Achieng’s record to 16 wins and two losses. She holds four belts - the WBF, CBC, Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) and the Kenyan title.
