53 athletes invited for national trials ahead of World Athletics Relays in China

A total of 53 athletes have been
invited by Athletics Kenya (AK) to participate in the National Trials ahead of
the World Athletics Relays, scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at Nyayo National
Stadium.
AK confirmed the list during a press
conference held at their Riadha House headquarters on Wednesday.
Paul Mutwii, Vice President and
Competition Director at AK, emphasized that only eligible athletes will
participate in the global showpiece.
“This is not an open event,” noted Mutwii.
“All the selected athletes have met the qualifying standards at recent local
meets and have also been cleared by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and
the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).”
Mutwii shared that the trials will serve
to select Kenya’s relay teams for the 4x100m, 4x400m, and mixed 4x400m events ahead
of the World Athletics Relays to take place in Guangzhou, China, on May 10–11.
He said selection will consider both
performances on the day and World Athletics rankings.
“Team composition may change if our
relay rankings drop before the qualification window closes. As of now, Kenya is
qualified in four relay events, but the women’s 4x100m is still outside the
mark,” he noted.
AK will also stage exhibition events
including the 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, steeplechase, long jump, and high
jump.
These events will give athletes an
opportunity to meet qualifying standards for the 2025 World Championships in
Tokyo.
Barnaba Korir, AK Director of Youth
and Development, said the exhibition events are part of the broader plan to
build depth across disciplines.
“We included events like the
steeplechase to build up the event other events will also gives athletes from
less-supported events get uplifted,” said Korir.
For relay selection, the top four finishers in the men’s 100m will
automatically make the 4x100m team, with two more added through a panel of
selectors.
In the 400m events, six athletes
will qualify directly, with two others picked by a selection panel.
