17 boxers punch tickets to National Intermediate Championships
Seventeen boxers, including Stanley Mathenge and Sheila Auma, have secured their spots in the National Intermediate Championship, set to take place from February 20-22, 2025, in Thika.
The fighters earned their qualification after emerging
victorious in the National Novices Championship, a three-day tournament held at
Green Park. The competition marked the first national event organized by the
Boxing Federation of Kenya.
In the heavyweight category, Lameck Okumu outclassed Joram
Mwangi in the over 90kg bout, while Clinton Mwangi overcame Charles Okedo in
the 86kg division. Meanwhile, Stanley Mathenge displayed dominance in the 48kg
men’s bout, defeating Tony Muoki.
"I'm so happy to win in the National Novices
Championship because reaching this stage has been my dream. Today, that dream
has come true, but my ultimate goal is to represent Kenya at the Olympics and
win a gold medal, breaking the record set by Robert Wangila Napunyi,"
Mathenge said.
Among the female contenders, Sally Ajema overpowered Joy
Bella Owano in the 74kg category, while Eunice Muthoni triumphed over Cynthia
Sirikwa. In the 54kg division, Sheila Auma delivered a strong performance to
defeat Everlyn Nyambura.
"I believe boxing can change my life and open doors for
me in other developed countries, helping my family escape poverty. I also see
it as a career opportunity, which is why I train so hard," said Auma.
Other boxers who booked their places in the next phase
include Javan James, Kennedy Omollo, Philip Derrick, Ramadhan Ngala, Sonia
Atieno, and Damathleen Boyan.
The focus now shifts to the National Intermediate
Championship in Thika, where these rising stars will look to take the next step
toward national and international glory.
