A court in Nairobi has found a woman guilty of trafficking a minor for labour exploitation.

Margaret Kemunto Nyaribo transported the minor from Kisii to Nairobi under the false promise of  enrolling her in school, the court heard.

However, the minor was instead subjected to forced labour as a house help and occasionally forced to sell vegetables at Nyaribo’s kiosk.

Milimani Children’s Court Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi found Nyaribo guilty of violating Section 3(3) as read with Section 3(5) of the Counter Trafficking in Persons Act.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the offence carries a mandatory punishment of at least 30 years in prison, a fine of no less than Ksh.30 million, or both.

The sentencing was set for January 21 pending the submission of a pre-sentencing report.
