Woman, 77, dies while waiting to receive gov’t Inua Jamii donation
A 77-year-old woman died on Thursday while waiting to receive her share of money under the government’s Inua Jamii Programme.
Martha Ondieng’a who hails from Bwonare village in South Mugirango, Kisii County had arrived at the deputy county commissioner’s office in Etago area hoping to receive the donation.
According to eyewitnesses, the elderly woman was on the queue waiting for her turn to receive the money when she excused herself, saying she was feeling tired.
She left the queue and went to take a rest under a shade. Thinking that the woman had fallen asleep, other locals who were waiting to receive their money would be shocked to discover that the granny had died.
Police officers from Etago station arrived at the scene and moved the body to Tabaka Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem to establish the cause of death.
Early this month, the government released Ksh.8.7 billion for payment to beneficiaries enrolled under the Inua Jamii Programme which seeks to cushion vulnerable persons from poverty and hunger.
Nelson Marwa, the Principal Secretary, State Department for Social Protection said the payments will be credited into the accounts of the duly registered beneficiaries beginning Monday, July 12.
According to the PS, each of the beneficiaries will receive receive Ksh.8,000 being payment for months of March, April, May and June 2021.
