Witness breaks down in tears during Kisii deputy governor's impeachment hearing

Emotions ran high during Kisii Deputy Governor Dr. Robert Monda's impeachment hearing, as main witness Dennis Mokaya broke down while telling his story.

The motion has caused family tensions because the parents and their son are giving evidence to the opposing parties in the case.

Mokaya told the Senate that, despite selling his salon shop in Nairobi to bribe the deputy governor for a job in the county, the DG did not keep his end of the bargain.

According to a weeping Mokaya, the ordeal caused intense emotional turmoil, even leading to his wife's miscarriage as a result of the loss of his life-saving organ.

“My wife was not in agreement that we sale our salon, but because it was going to change our lives, she eventually, when I didn’t get the job, she was devastated and even had a miscarriage.” Said Mokaya amid tears.

Mokaya described how he sold his salon and gave his parents Ksh.800,000 to bribe the Deputy Governor in order to secure a position as commercial manager at Gusii Water and Sanitation.

He told the Senate how the Deputy Governor Ksh. 799 thousand shillings through Mpesa platform.

The first tranche of 249 thousand shillings was sent in three tranches to the Deputy Governor's phone on May 28, 2023. The second tranche was 250 thousand shillings, also sent via Mpesa, and the final tranche was delivered to the DG in cash.

Mokaya, who is at odds with his parents over the issue, told the Senate that his parents, who are friends with the deputy governor, warned him not to file any formal complaints.

The parents, who will appear as witnesses for the Deputy Governor, claim that the money sent was a soft loan that was being paid back.

An emotional Mokaya was upset that his own father was providing evidence to refute what he insisted was the truth.

"This is my entire life savings that I have lost; if my own father can choose friendship over the truth, so be it." said Mokaya

Mokaya told the Senate that he wants his money back from the Deputy Governor, but he also asked that he be punished for abuse of office and bribery.
