Why I focus on Ruto: Morara Kebaso speaks on Kenya's corruption crisis

Lawyer and activist Morara Kebaso escalated his criticism of President William Ruto's administration on Wednesday, holding the head of state directly responsible for the systemic corruption plaguing the country.

Speaking candidly on Citizen TV's JKLive show, Kebaso did not shy away from placing the blame for widespread corruption squarely on President Ruto. He argued that the President’s alleged involvement in corruption has created a culture of impunity that permeates all levels of government, turning Kenya into what he describes as a "crime scene."

"Kenya is a crime scene; it needs to be fenced off for investigations," Kebaso stated in a remark that has since gone viral on social media.

Kebaso criticized Ruto's handling of government projects, accusing the administration of either failing to initiate projects, allowing them to stall, or completing them amidst "massive looting" of public funds.

"This is what I say about the projects of President William Ruto: they either never start, or if they start, they stall, or if they don’t stall, they are finished with massive looting of public funds. Everywhere, it’s a crime scene. Kenya is a crime scene; it needs to be fenced off for investigations," he asserted.

When asked why he has been so critical of Ruto's government, Kebaso explained, "The reason I focus so much on President William Ruto is because if we didn’t have a corrupt President, 50% of corruption in government wouldn’t exist. The fish rots from the head."

He added, "The moment the President is corrupt, everyone else feels emboldened to steal. So, everyone will steal, down to the lowest level, including a teacher in school."

Kebaso also dismissed arguments that Ruto should not be held accountable for projects that stalled when he was Deputy President during the previous regime under President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"Let's not entertain this amorphous conversation that the Deputy President had no real influence in government. The DP was constitutionally in office, and government projects were still running in every ministry. We have a President who lies, and he cannot pass up any opportunity to lie to Kenyans. He just can’t help it. The President’s word should be valuable and meaningful to the people of Kenya," Kebaso added.

Kebaso has become a public favourite due to his relentless scrutiny of stalled projects launched by the government. He has single-handedly toured various counties to ascertain the true status of a litany of projects the President has recently launched, including those initiated during Ruto’s tenure as Deputy President.

Kebaso revealed that he has so far visited at least 18 counties and vowed to continue his public scrutiny of the government, despite facing threats and intimidation.

As his campaign continues to gain traction, many Kenyans rally behind Kebaso, viewing him as a champion for transparency and government accountability.
