Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha gives her remarks during a workshop between her Ministry and stakeholders from the private sector in Nairobi on May 17, 2023.
In the new plan, Kenyans will be required to part with 2.75 per cent of their monthly salaries towards the scheme with the minimum capped at Ksh.300.
Under NHIF, Kenyans pay an average ranging from Ksh.150 to Ksh.1,700 for employed workers and Ksh.500 for the self-employed.
To facilitate a smooth transition, President William Ruto's cabinet announced a mass registration process commencing on June 21, 2024 across all counties.
Under the scheme, all Kenyans currently registered as NHIF members shall be required to register afresh as a SHIF member.
Further, Principal Secretary of State Department for Medical Services, Harry Kimtai revealed that Kenyans would register using their mobile devices. Those who seek assistance can visit any public hospital or be helped by the community health promoters situated across the counties.
"Registration will be done at the comfort of your hand with either a smart phone or the other normal cellular phones," PS Kimtai said during a forum at Allens Hotel in Nandi County on Tuesday.
The Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, provides a sample registration form listing the requirements needed.
