National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has ordered the House's Majority and Minority Leaders to contemplate overhauling the Public and Petitions Committee on the grounds that its members are absconding duty.

Wetangula noted that members of the Committee, chaired by Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai, were a no-show during a Parliamentary session on Tuesday and their absence raised concerns among their colleagues.

"I have instructed the Majority and Minority Leaders in the House to consider reconstituting the Public and Petitions Committee due to the continued absence of its Members led by their Chairperson in the House to handle pertinent matters from petitioners,” the Speaker said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

"This is after the Committee's Chairperson Hon Nimrod Mbai and his Members failed to appear in the House today raising concern from Members."

Wetangula added that the Committee's progress has been hampered by the absence of its members, resulting in a backlog of unresolved petitions.

"Kenyans resort to the House to resolve their grievances because they have hope in the House and the Committee is doing a disservice to them by not ensuring that their Petitions are addressed," he said.
