Wetangula suspends EALA MP Falhada Iman for 90 days after fight in Parliament

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula addressing the House on April 9, 2025.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has announced a 90-day suspension for East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament, Falhada Iman, following her involvement in a physical altercation with Nominated MP Umulkheir Harun.

The altercation, which took place on parliamentary grounds on Tuesday, was captured on video and widely circulated across social media, drawing public attention and controversy.

Addressing the House on Wednesday afternoon, Speaker Wetangula condemned the incident, stating that Iman’s actions were unacceptable and undermined the integrity of Parliament.

"...it is clear that the violent altercation casts parliament in bad light and is likely to reflect adversely on the dignity or integrity of Parliament and indeed the sanctity of the precincts of Parliament," said Wetangula.

In addition to the suspension, Wetangula directed that MP Iman submit a written explanation regarding the incident by 5:00 PM on Monday, April 14.

The suspension takes effect immediately, and Iman will be prohibited from accessing Parliament buildings or its facilities during the 90-day period.

"After reviewing the video and the incident report, it is clear that this violent altercation casts Parliament in a negative light and has the potential to damage the dignity and integrity of this House," Wetangula remarked. "This behavior is unbecoming of a public official and will not be tolerated."

Wetangula emphasized that, as an EALA member, Iman does not have the same privileges as MPs who sit in the Kenyan National Assembly, particularly regarding the right to address the House directly. Therefore, the Speaker has directed that Iman explain her actions in writing.

The Speaker further clarified that, aside from the day Iman submits her written explanation, she will not be allowed access to Parliament facilities during the suspension period. If she needs to deliver her explanation in person, she must be escorted by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

EALA MPs, though not full members of the National Assembly, are granted certain privileges, including the ability to access Parliament and its facilities such as the gym. However, Wetangula stressed that such privileges must be exercised with respect for the institution and its values.

Both MPs have since expressed regret over the incident, with Iman offering a public apology for her actions.

The situation remains under review with the speaker expected to issue a final verdict later.

"Upon reviewing the response by Falhada, I will guide the House accordingly on any further action that can be taken based on the apologies I have directed to issue," said Wetangula.

The Speaker also noted that sanctions would be taken on the MPs who recorded and shared the video capturing the incident.
