‘We're all equal under the law,’ Ruto allies defend raid on Uhuru's son's home
Kenya Kwanza leaders have now come out to
defend the Friday raid on former President Uhuru Kenyatta's son Jomo’s residence in Karen by police officers.
Speaking on Saturday during a tour in Kisii
County, Kenya Kwanza affiliated leaders faulted the former president over his claims
of political injustices, saying that every Kenyan citizen is equal and the
police have a right to search any residence regardless of a person’s caliber.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa said, “Kenyans are shocked with what happened last evening...we're all equal under the law. It doesn't matter, what position you hold or even former President must abide by the rule of law.”
“Wale walikuwa wanatusomea eti polisi walikagua nyumba zao...wale watoto wao ni kama wetu tu and even their mothers are like ours...you can't tell us about your mother and how she's been protected for 50 yrs kwani nani anachunga wetu?”
The Kikuyu MP urged security agencies not to be intimidated, adding that they should continue with
the alleged crackdown on unlicensed firearms.
”I want to ask Inspector General and DCI Amin don't be threatened make sure you do your work...there are those with fake and genuine guns alafu polisi wakija kuchunguza mnasema eti ooo listen to concerns of Kenyans,” he said.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki in a statement to newsrooms on Friday night, said security agencies had been tasked to search the Karen area as part of a broader operation which seeks to weed out civilian firearm holders and leaders of known criminal gangs.
“Today afternoon, an operation has been going on targeting three homesteads within the Karen area where a total of 23 firearms, some of which are suspected to have been used in illegal activities are kept,” CS Kindiki said in the statement.
South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro slammed former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying, “What is the mistake askari akiuliza raia hizi bunduki umetoa wapi...na alisahau yeye si rais tena (What's the harm in security officers asking citizens where they got guns from... did he forget he is no longer the President?)
The remarks by lawmakers follow Uhuru’s
sentiments when he alleged that unidentified officers using vehicles with
South Sudan registration numbers raided his son’s home.
